Sheepskin vs Cowhide Leather Jackets: Which Should You Buy?

If you are shopping for a real leather jacket, the first big decision is not the style or the colour, it is the hide. Most genuine leather jackets sold in the UK are made from either sheepskin or cowhide, and the two feel, wear and age very differently. Pick the right one and your jacket will suit the way you actually live; pick the wrong one and you may end up with something that feels too stiff for the commute or too delicate for the bike.

This guide compares sheepskin and cowhide leather jackets side by side, explains who each one suits, and points you to real styles in our range so you can see the difference for yourself.

What is sheepskin leather?

Sheepskin leather is the tanned hide of a sheep. The fibres are looser and finer than cowhide, which is why a sheepskin jacket feels soft and drapes closely to the body almost straight out of the box. It is also noticeably lighter, which matters if you plan to wear your jacket all day or carry it over your arm on the train.

Sheepskin also comes in a second form you may know better: shearling, where the wool is left on the hide and used as a warm inner lining or a plush collar. If warmth is your priority, see our men's shearling leather jackets and women's shearling leather jackets.

Pros of sheepskin

  • Comfort from the first wear – no stiff break-in period.
  • Lightweight – easy to layer over a T-shirt, shirt or fine knit.
  • Elegant drape – ideal for slim-fit biker jackets, blazers and shirt jackets.

Cons of sheepskin

  • More likely to show scuffs and scratches if you are hard on your clothes.
  • Less wind-blocking bulk than a thick cowhide (unless it is shearling-lined).

What is cowhide leather?

Cowhide is the hide of cattle, and it is the classic material behind many traditional motorcycle and work jackets. The fibres are denser and the hide is thicker, so cowhide feels firmer, holds a crisp silhouette and stands up better to abrasion. The trade-off is weight and a short break-in period: a new cowhide jacket can feel a little stiff for the first few weeks before it moulds to your shoulders and elbows.

Pros of cowhide

  • Toughness – better resistance to scrapes, scuffs and daily knocks.
  • Structure – lapels, collars and shoulders keep their shape.
  • Character with age – creases and patina develop as you wear it.

Cons of cowhide

  • Heavier on the shoulders, especially in long coats.
  • Needs wearing in before it feels as relaxed as sheepskin.

Which is warmer: sheepskin or cowhide?

As plain leather, a thicker cowhide shell blocks wind slightly better than a thin sheepskin. In practice, though, warmth comes down to the lining and the cut far more than the hide. A sheepskin jacket with a soft viscose lining is a three-season layer; a coat with a full shearling interior is a proper winter coat, whether the outer is sheepskin or cowhide. For example, our Women's Charcoal Grey Shearling Coat is sheepskin with a full shearling interior, while the Men's Brown Shearling Hooded Duffle Coat is cowhide with a full shearling inner lining. Both are built for cold UK winters.

Which lasts longer?

Both are genuine leather, and both will last for many years with basic care. Cowhide generally has the edge for sheer toughness, so if your jacket will be thrown in the boot of a car, worn on a motorbike or used for outdoor work, cowhide is the safer choice. If your jacket is mainly for the office, evenings out, travel and weekends, sheepskin will easily hold up, and you will probably wear it more because it is so comfortable.

How to choose: a quick decision guide

Choose sheepskin if you want a jacket that feels soft immediately, you prefer a slim, close fit, you will layer it over shirts and knits, or you want something light enough for travel.

Choose cowhide if you want maximum toughness, you like a structured, heavier jacket, you ride a motorbike or work outdoors, or you enjoy a jacket that visibly ages with you.

Choose shearling (either hide) if you mainly need warmth for winter.

Sizing and fit are the same for both

Whichever hide you choose, our jackets come in standard sizes from XXS to 5XL. Measure your chest or bust and check our size guide; if you are between sizes, take the larger one, as leather has very little give. Each jacket is dispatched within 2–7 business days, then delivered in 5–7 days, so about 7–14 days in total, with free shipping to the UK, US and Canada and a free prepaid return label for any return within 30 days, for any reason.

FAQs: sheepskin vs cowhide leather jackets

Is sheepskin leather real leather?

Yes. Sheepskin leather is genuine animal leather, not PU or faux leather. It is simply a softer, lighter hide than cowhide.

Is cowhide better than sheepskin for a motorbike jacket?

For riding, cowhide is generally preferred because it is thicker and more abrasion-resistant. Note that a fashion leather jacket is not certified motorcycle protective equipment unless it is specifically sold as such.

Does sheepskin leather stretch?

Sheepskin softens and moulds slightly to your body, but it does not stretch enough to fix a jacket that is too small. Buy the right size from the start.

Which is easier to care for?

Both need the same basics: wipe with a dry, soft cloth, condition a couple of times a year, keep away from direct heat, and store on a wide hanger. Cowhide is a little more forgiving of everyday scuffs.

Are sheepskin and cowhide jackets the same price?

In our range, most sheepskin and cowhide leather jackets sit at a similar price point; shearling-lined coats cost more because of the extra material. Check each product page for the current price.
